Formula Student (FS) is not an ordinary motorsport competition: it aims to test students’ engineering, design, business and team working skills. Teams are to assume that a manufacturing firm has commissioned them to produce a prototype car for evaluation. The car’s intended sales market is the non-professional autocross or sprint racer, and the firm is planning to produce 1,000 units per year. That means that we must produce a car that is not only fast and reliable but that can also be manufactured within cost and specification. The teams have to design and build their car throughout the year then demonstrate at the competition, through a series of events and exercises, that it is fit for purpose. We will also have to present a business plan that sells its concept to potential investors. Collectively, there are over 200 international teams attracting local, national and international sponsors. The FS competition is, in many people's opinion, the most cost effective way of teaching and developing practical skills in students ever devised. A number of leading international companies use the competition as a 'milk-round' to cherry-pick the most talented graduates. The event has mass media coverage including top papers like the Daily Telegraph and news channels such as the BBC.
