2009 Autumn Design Team Hierarchy
The team hierarchy shows each member of the 2008/2009 SURTES team.

At the peak of the tree is the Team Leader, Timothy Bingham, who was responsible for the whole project and took many decisions as overall leader of the team. The Managing Director, Paul Morgan aided with team
coordination and project leadership. Tim and Paul worked closely with the Technical Director and the Chiefs to ensure the tasks ran smoothly and maintained
overall control of the team. Paul also had sole responsibility for sponsorship acquisition, marketing and aiding the SAE with beta testing the new
costing regulation 2009. During the later stages of the project, Paul also took on a technical share of the project through aiding the Chief of Suspension,
Steering and Vehicle Dynamics with the design and assembly of components.
The four Technical Design Chiefs were responsible for the delivery of suitable designs which achieved the necessary requirements,
met the target weight saving and ensured that each component design was compatible with any interacting systems. The Chiefs were also
responsible for the management of the own team of level 3 design engineers, providing technical support and leadership where appropriate.
The specific roles of each Chief are outlined below:
Chief of Chassis Design – Bruno Monty was responsible for ensuring that the overall chassis design met the governing regulations
and achieved maximum weight saving where possible. Large efforts were made by Bruno to ensure that his team maintained a suitable level of structural
rigidity within the chassis while striving to reduce weight.
Chief of Power Train Design – Robin Redfern’s role consisted of researching and sourcing weight-saving, alternative components
in the drive train assembly, providing leadership and technical guidance for the power train team and guiding decisions made by the team in the
design and integration of the engine, gearbox and differential with particular emphasis on the drive train.
Chief of Steering, Suspension and Vehicle Dynamics – Phillip Harris' primary role consisted of the technical design of the
suspension kinematics. Further to this Phillip provided detailed guidance for the design of components, aided by his detailed knowledge of
manufacturing processes and aerospace materials. He was also responsible for the research and sourcing of unique components.
Chief of Electronics and Systems Integration – Alexej Domke was responsible for supporting and providing technical assistance
to the ESI team in the design of the vehicle electronics, data logging, braking and safety systems. Alexej was key in the bringing together of
ancillary systems and components such as pedals, gear shifter and the seat.
